The page trolley is like a stone, but on wheels. A stone is a (usually) cast iron work table needed for making up pages of type. The flat, unbending surface ensures that the page, locked up in its chase, is truly flat.
Page trolleys are very useful in a large composing room, as they allow the pages, at varying stages of being made up, to move from section to section of the room. For example from advertising to news to proofing.
