The Monotype Keyboard is a machine of many parts. This is just one part, the left-hand keybutton bank. The pair of these give access to all the matrices in the matrix case in use on the caster. Note that there is no shift key: capitals, bold, italic, symbols, each separate character has its own key button.

For non-typical applications, printers have special sets of keybutton banks. These include mathematical, timetable, and foreign language applications. This particular keybutton bank is equipped with keytops for a non-latin alphabet.
