The compositor gathers the mats into the Ludlow composing stick to compose the required line of text.

This particular fount is an italic face, with the sides of the mats around 15 degrees from vertical. To accommodate this, the composing stick is constructed at the same angle. From the back (the side viewed during composition) the angle seems wrong, but if you turn the stick over and look at the front (cavity) side, it is correct.
