Pre-dating the computer typesetters, these machines enabled
type-like lettering to be produced on plain paper (for paste-up)
or direct-image offset plates.
Another popular device was the IBM Selectric Composer. There are
also some normal-looking manual typewriters which have the feature
of proportional spacing.
